Recycling in Omaha (Omaha Sierra Club)

  • 7020 Cass Street Omaha, NE, 68132 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Both in person and on-line:
First Star Recycling has been processing the City of Omaha’s recyclables since 2006. In Nov., 2020, the City of Omaha issued all households large carts, with lids, for homeowners to collect their recycling, with the anticipation that this would encourage people to recycle even more of their household waste.

Patrick Leahy, CEO of First Star Recycling, will be giving us an update on recycling in Omaha. We wanted to know how Omaha’s collection rates have changed over the past four years, since the addition of the yard waste carts. We’d like to hear what recycling markets are like today, and how they have changed over time. And we also want to learn about some of the changes First Star has made in their processing of materials, including accepting the Hefty Energy Bags to be processed into pellets for plastic lumber.

Please join us for a very informative presentation, either in person or on Zoom, to learn more about the state of recycling in Omaha today. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link

Car Seat & Breast Pump Recycling Event (Nuture Omaha)

  • 3000 South 84th Street Omaha, NE, 68124 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Our CPSTs at Nurture Omaha have teamed up with Children's Nebraska Car Seat Safety Team to be able to recycle MORE seats!

This event will be FREE FOR EVERYONE! And you'll receive educational info and little token of appreciation as a thank you for recycling.

If you'd like to make a donation straight to Safe Kids Douglas County for ensuring car seat safety is accessible to everyone, please follow this link (“Designation” must be “Injury Prevention” to go to the car seat program): https://www.childrensomaha.org/.../give-to-the-childrens.../

Car seats are encouraged to be clean. They don't have to be sparkling, but no gunk, animal feces, human feces, vomit, etc. We do not have the ability to clean car seats, and our recycling center cannot clean them either.

Recycling events are held every 3-4 months. Stay tuned to this page for future recycling events!

--------------------------------------------

**NURTURE OMAHA DOES NOT ACCEPT CAR SEATS IN BETWEEN EVENTS OR BEFORE OR AFTER THE EVENT TIME. We don't have any space to store the seats, and leaving seats outside of our office increases risk of it being stolen and used by someone else when it may be unsafe for them to do so. Thank you for helping us keep the community safe!

---------------------------------------------

What do people do with those thousands of car seats once the child grows out of it, it expires, or it is in a crash? Well, many people just throw them away! There used to be a place to recycle in Omaha, but they no longer accept car seats. Target does a trade-in event once or twice a year (awesome choice to get a coupon!), and Babies R Us is no longer around to have trade-in events either! Omaha was left with NO resource to recycle car seats until NOW!

Nurture Omaha and Children's Nebraska are dedicated to staying green and keeping the environment healthy by being as paperless as possible, recycling breast pumps and car seats, and promoting human milk feeding which is one of the greenest things you can do for the environment and the human race.

Find the details on our Facebook event page and make sure you click "going" to stay updated on details! If you have a question please message Nurture Omaha's Facebook page!

These events will be held only on SPECIFIC DATES. Please watch the calendar and event closely as times may change due to Covid-19 or weather events.

Did you know we have a Car Seat Safety Education Class called Nurture & Protect? If you think you or someone you know would benefit from taking our class please direct them to our website or Facebook page!

Master Naturalist Mondays: MOTUS

Motus wildlife tracking system in Nebraska.
October 21st, 2024 | 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm (CST)
I will describe the world wide Motus system role in Nebraska and how to use the publicly available information. What the future plan for expansion of Motus in Nebraska and how Master Naturalists can get involved.

Presenter: Glenn Pollock, Citizen Scientist

Presenter Bio:
I have installed six Motus receiving stations in Iowa and Nebraska. I first started working to save the natural world in 1970. My profession was in Biomedical Equipment technician where I did human telemetry in hospitals, a skill I have applied to bird tracking telemetry.
I have been active with restoration and restoring lands in Iowa and Nebraska since 1972. I specialized in tall grass prairie and some wetland work. I have recorded over 125 Prairie Pioneer Cemeteries through the Midwest and stewardship for four virgin prairie in Iowa and Nebraska.

This webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. Nebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide volunteer conservation program. Our program recruits, trains, manages, and provides resources for our volunteer naturalist members. We use four strategies to meet Nebraska’s conservation needs, Habit Stewardship, Community Science, Environmental Education & Interpretation, and Outdoor Recreation & Skills.

This free webinar series will host a variety of presenters and subject matter within these four conservation strategies. Master Naturalist Mondays is a space to connect us to our conservation motivations and inspirations, and our Naturalist community across the state of Nebraska.

All webinars will be recorded and found HERE.
